Tips to consider when driving
If you drive 5 to 10 Klms under the speed limit you will never receive a speeding fine. Most other drivers also consider this to be a fair speed limit and not too slow. Try to avoid driving in the right lane unless you are about to turn right or overtaking another vehicle. Some times you may need to drive slower than this if the road conditions require. For example, you cannot drive any faster than the vehicle in front of you in peak our, or in heavy rain where visibility is poor, or in narrow residential streets. Of course, driving more than 10 Klms under the speed limit is also not acceptable if there is no reason to do so. This generally attracts the ire of other drivers and can even incur a fine from police for obstructing traffic.
Whenever you enter a new street or cross an intersection, always look for a speed sign. Generally on main roads you will find a speed sign within 100 metres of the intersection opposite. If you cannot see a speed sign and it is only one lane, then assume that it is 50 Klm and drive at 40 Klm until you see the speed sign. If you don’t see one, then continue to drive under 50 Klm. Also when entering a new street look for other conditions which will affect the way you drive. Such as if the road has bike or bus lanes, parked cars, school zones, etc.
Watch your mirror frequently to be aware of where you are in relations to other traffic so if you need to make a lane change you will know where other traffic is. When watching mirrors and head checks into your blind spots, do not stare. Your attention should always remain forward and if looking away you should just make a glance, and if you need multiple glances do so, rather than shifting your attention fully away from the front to stare for longer periods.
